Daily Learning Log
A simple reflection practice to make work clearer, reduce pressure, and support learning over time.
Daily learning log
In many teams and projects, work is discussed mainly through updates and plans. What was done, what is next, and what is blocking progress. This can be useful, but it often leaves out something important: how the work is actually developing, and what is becoming clearer along the way.
The FOCUS-ROI Daily Learning Log is a simple reflection practice that helps make that part of the work visible. It creates space to notice learning, direction, and movement, not just activity.
It is intentionally lightweight. There is no correct way to use it, and no required frequency. Some teams use it daily. Others a few times a week, or whenever things feel unclear. Use it as often as it is useful to you and your team.
How it works
You answer a small set of questions, using one short sentence for each. The questions follow the natural flow of how work tends to develop, from intention to learning to action.
You can use the log on your own, or together with others. It can replace or complement status updates, check-ins, or stand-ups, but it also works well on its own.

How often to use it
There is no right or wrong cadence. Many teams find that using the log daily or several times a week helps maintain clarity, especially during busy periods. Others use it less frequently, as a way to pause and reflect when needed.
If it feels useful, keep using it. If it does not, adapt it or stop. The value lies in what it helps you notice, not in following the practice for its own sake.
Common questions
Is this meant to replace our stand-up or status updates?
It can, but it does not have to. Some teams use the Daily Learning Log instead of traditional updates. Others use it alongside them. What matters is whether it helps create more clarity, not what you replace.
Do we need to use all the questions every time?
No. You can use all of them, or only a few. Some days one or two questions are enough. The log works best when it adapts to the situation, not the other way around.
Can I use this on my own?
Yes. Many people use the Daily Learning Log individually to make sense of their work and decisions. It also works well in pairs or teams, but it does not require group use.
How long should each entry take?
Usually just a few minutes. One short sentence per question is enough. If it starts to feel heavy or time-consuming, that is a signal to simplify.
What if nothing feels like it moved forward?
That is still useful to notice. Learning, clarification, or deciding not to act are also forms of progress. The log helps make those moments visible instead of invisible.
Is this about performance tracking?
No. The log is not a reporting or evaluation tool. It is a reflection practice meant to support learning, clarity, and shared understanding.
What if this does not work for us?
Then you stop. Try it once or a few times. If it helps, keep it. If it does not, adapt it or leave it behind. There is no obligation.
